Need a smile today?
I read this cheery picture book last week about a chain of inspirations and smiles. It starts with Amelia smiling as she runs through the streets with her parents.
They pass by Mrs. Higgins, who catches the smile and starts to bake cookies for her grandson, Lionel, in Mexico.
Inspired, Lionel sings a song about cookies to his class, and that inspires one of them to become a teacher as well ...
and then another to ...
and so on ...
Amelia's smile travels to England, Israel, Paris and more, spreading goodwill, inspiring dreams, and sparking actions towards those dreams. The storyline is straightforward, simple, and the burst of colours is infectious.
*A Personal Note:
There are bad things happening in the world. Indonesians, our neighbours, aren't alone in their fear and sorrow. I contemplated posting this book review at such a time and wondered if it would be insensitive. But this isn't a book about being happy.
It is about the power of a smile and how it travels as inspiration from one small, good action to the next. Actions we can all do for ourselves and someone near or far. Pay-it-forward style.
Here's the book trailer of Because Amelia Smiled. I hope it brings a smile to you all and inspires you to do one good/creative/productive thing today. You never know what that thing can achieve and how it can one day inspire others. Enjoy!

Really enjoyed the honest voice of this narrator ~ a teenager let down by his mother and the foster care system, and almost-picked up through his involvement with a gang.
