But sometimes, some friends (for some particular streak of time) are … exhaust fumes, a sour stench in the air, the invisible fists plunging down our shoulders. They can, on certain nights, be the shadows in our fitful sleep.
We need friends, but we need them good, not toxic.
We can have the most beautiful friendships, but only when we open our hearts wide enough.
This week, I’ve sourced out several excellent reads for pre-schoolers on the topic of friendship.
Sweet, tricky friendship.
My favourites are the one between the Italian craftsman and his pigeon friend, and the one between a caterpillar and a gosling.
Go check these out from your library today!
· Farfallina and Marcel Holly Keller
A caterpillar and a gosling become best friends. One day, one of them climbs a tree and doesn’t come down while the other waits throughout winter. Will they reunite? Have they changed? Will their friendship be as strong as before? (Age 4 & above)
*Farfallina means ‘little butterfly’ in Italian.
· Hunter’s Best Friend at School Laura Malone Elliott
Hunter and Stripe are best friends. One day, Stripe gets into mischief and wants Hunter to join him. (Age 4/5 & above)
· Enemy Pie Derek Munson
A little boy hopes that the pie his father makes will help get rid of his #1 enemy!
(Age 6 & above)
· Angelo David Macaulay
An unlikely and deeply moving friendship blossoms when an Italian craftsman discovers a nest with an injured baby pigeon (And Angelo isn’t that fond of pigeons …) (Age 7 & above)
Let me know which is your favourite!
