In previous posts, I’d recommended wonderful picture books based on themes a preschooler would be interested in. This week, I would like to invite you to recommend picture books (for aged 0-6) that you and your child have enjoyed reading.
They could be on any theme. Fiction and non-fiction are both welcome.
Simply include the full title and author’s name, and tell us in a few lines what the book is about, and why you guys love it so much. (I usually include the illustrator’s name, too, because I think the writer and the artist share credits for picture books ... )
There is a community of children’s books lovers here, and though not all of you are comfortable with leaving comments, I do very much hope you could share a favourite picture book with us!
Here, I'll go first:
· Pumpkin Soup Helen Cooper
Cat, Squirrel and Duck are three good friends. They make pumpkin soup together every day until one morning, Duck decides to help make the soup in a different way … I love the friendship of the three animals. I love the illustrations Ms. Cooper did. The Times Educational Supplement called this book ‘a musical comedy and a visual feast,’ and I agree – duck wings-down! (I also love the sequel to this book: A Pipkin of Pepper.)
· I'm Gonna Like Me: Letting Off A Little Self-Esteem
Jamie Lee Curtis & Laura Cornell
(Yep, it’s the actress …) I’ve always loved books that encourage us to appreciate our authentic selves. I like how the pair has presented this issue of self-love in an amazingly delightful manner. Makes you smile as you read along. (Plus, children need to know it’s okay to be their quirky selves.)
· Miss Rumphius Barbara Cooney
Another book that made me smile as I read along, but for another reason. Miss Rumphius follows her grandfather’s dream of travelling around the world and doing one thing to make the world even more beautiful. The glowing strength of this character and the pictures by Ms. Cooney combine to form a story to remember for life, and a tale to be passed down to the next generation. (I love this book so much I’m going to buy and keep it to remind myself to do as Miss Rumphius did ~ to make the world even more beautiful.)
· If You Give A Mouse A Cookie Laura Numeroff & Felicia Bond
The story begins with a boy giving a mouse a cookie, and the mouse continues to request for other things. Here’s a Youtube clip on this story done by The School World:
