March 2nd is Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Have you (and/or your child) been blown away by his kooky characters? Does your mind travel to far-off places whenever you read his stories?

Today, I read The Great Henry McBride. It is about a boy sitting under a tree, thinking of all the fantastic careers he could have when he’s grown. The thing is, he doesn’t believe he could only have one fantastic career.

“’ … What a wonderful guy!
Why, he’s got the very best job that there is!
The Seal-Training Doctor! Just look at him ride!
 The Broadcasting-Rabbit-Man, Two-Gun McBride!”

Hey … now that’s a powerful idea.

I want to write till I draw the last breath. But there are also other jobs I’ve dreamed of doing (as I carry on with Writing, of course):

· Planting apple seeds (like Johnny Appleseed) or becoming a blueberry farmer
· Making paintings
· Writing songs
· Teaching
· Becoming a trapeze dancer in an animal-friendly circus
· Operating a café in a snug town
· Setting up a house for children who feel lost/abandoned or just want to ‘get away from their world for a while.’ (There will be a library. And stray cats & dogs are very much welcome.)
· Becoming a detective (especially one working on cases involving children & women)

Some of these careers have, perhaps, passed me by. I suppose it might be a bit late for me to be a detective or a trapeze dancer. And I don’t know if I can afford a café or a house. But it’s okay. They’re lovely to fantasize about (and still secretly hope for).

What Henry McBride has taught me is that, perhaps we don’t have to just do one thing in our lifetime? Perhaps we can fulfill a few more dreams along the way, too?

Maybe the best job I'll get is The Blueberry-Farming-Kids-&-Strays-Housing-Amateur Painter-Who-Writes. Or The Song-Writing Detective-Writer-Who-Owns-A-Cafe.

What other career fantasies do you have? Are you still pursuing them? If not, will you ever, again?

{I'd love to hear about your favourite Seuss story, too!}
